Today's society is fast paced, isn't it? It's hard to find time to relax, put your feet up or maybe experience something different or unusual. Well, today being a bank holiday and having some time to spare I decided to listen to some good music I opened up the Youtube app on my iPad and there you go.....Avril Lavigne popped up. Then I thought: I haven't listened to her in months. I don't think she is now as popular as she was when I was 16. I took a deep breath and decided to let me go and started a nostalgic half hour listening to 2000-2010 tunes ranging from the same Lavigne to Hilary Duff and Green Day. I still remember how everyone was so obsessed with them in my teen years: big poster in the bedroom, dedicated screen names on MSN and school backpacks with their name handwritten all over (wonder what parents think of this?!?). Not forgetting having your favourite singer full-time as your phone wallpaper. Lavigne, Duff, Green Day, Tokyo Hotel, Blue, the Spice Girls and many more were idols for his even if our parents reminded us to have more concrete reference points in life. We were 15, 16 no many worries in life, watching to MTV for 70% of your free time and then in the remaining 30% talking to our friends about the music videos watched on the same. Music was different, very different form today. Do not get me wrong, music is fantastic and is a great outlet for emotions and and always will be. However, look at the top 40.. don't you think today's hits have become shallow and less innocent (singing over and over about the same thing and accompanied by the same "provocative" music video). I think yesterday's world was a little more innocent or maybe I was not old enough to realise it was not innocent after all and has always been as it is today. Listening to Avril Lavigne, the Green Day etc. was also a way to release our adolescence fears and somehow escaping for the day-to-day reality thanks to the punk/rock movement the two above were leading. I am not saying that me or my friends became punks but we felt connected to a movement of inner rebellion, a movement of change and a movement which thanks to its loud notes gave us strength to face one of the toughest periods in life: adolescence. 2000 music (our parents and the society) also taught us that you have to work hard and do your best to obtain what you want and be someone in life. I will finish this article with a question for your. Music plays a big part in shaping the minds and souls of young generations: what do you think some girls in their 20 teach to the generations of tomorrow while they dance in a skimpy outfit and sing about "love" (well... a very materialist and physical version of it)? Before you go, a few 2000s songs to get you as nostalgic as I am today: Today I want to introduce a girl group, known as Cimorelli, which in this part of the year seems to be very popular on Twitter. Made up of six sisters from Sacramento, California (Christina, Katherine, Lisa, Amy, Lauren, and Dani Cimorelli), the band is unfortunately not as popular on the radio as it is on Twitter. The girls' style is really peculiar and they mostly use acapella with a few instruments, making them a unique act in the music panorama. Formed in 2007, Cimorelli, rose to notoriety thanks to videos of vocal performances regularly uploaded to Youtube, landing a contract with Universal Music Group. With 5 EPs already released the group was also nominated for several awards. I hope that in an era when boy-bands (One Directions, 5SOS, etc.) seem to have it all, Cimorelli can catch a glimpse of well deserved recognition. Keep up the good job girls! If you would like to know more about Cimorelli and their fabulously unique music check out the official website at: http://www.cimorellimusic.com After "My top 5 albums of 2014", here, just for you, my suggestion on what artists you should keep an eye on in 2015. 1 - FLORRIE Florence Arnlod, better known as Florrie, is a 26 year old Bristolian who started her career in 2008 as drummer for artists like Kilye Minougue. Soon afterwards she realised her real passion was for singing and began a solo career in 2010, releasing 4 EPs. Currently signed to Sony, she will release an album in the early stages of 2015. 2 - MADISON BEER Very popular on social media and signed to Island Def Jam, this young American girl is surely going to make it big in the music industry. The first time I heard her singing I wondered why she wasn't famous like Beyonce already. Have a listen and I am sure you will agree with me. Madison Beer-Unbreakable from Rocket Steadi on Vimeo. 3 - LAUREN PLATT You have seen her on the X Factor UK this year and you probably were genuinely disappointed when she was sent home. I am confident enough to say that she has a bright future ahead. In fact such a talent is no easily found. 2014 has been an amazing year for the music industry with hundreds of major productions and a handful of new promising artists getting noticed by the people who matter in the business. Before waving the last goodbye and saying welcome to 2015, I think it is time to unveil my top 5 albums of the year. 1 - DEMI (deluxe) by Demi Lovato A re-release of 2013's DEMI packed with 7 new tracks including her collaboration with Olly Murs, "Up", and live renditions of unforgettable anthems like "Neon Lights". 2 - 1989 by Taylor Swift Taylor Swift's best album so far. Equipped with an 80's tune, it is just heaven for ears! Probably Taylor Swift has been the biggest surprise of 2014. 3 - Chapter One by Ella Henderson Despite being only 18 years old, Ella Henderson delivered an album which is at least 18x better than the ones we have seen from far more experienced acts during the year. It seems that SyCo has signed one of the most talented singers on the whole planet. 4 - My Everything by Ariana Grande Ariande Grande has been accused of being a diva. Whether she is a diva or not, this album is undoubtedly amazing and deserves the highest respect. Some tracks are just too perfect to be real! 5 - Little Red by Katy B Little Red has given to Katy B, the opportunity to show her genuine talent which for a long time went unnoticed. I think you will fall in love with this production. Also interested in knowing what my favourite song of 2014 is? Here it is! |
